Legend of the Selkies
‘Legend of the Selkies’ was a commission for a child’s first birthday by his parents. They wanted to incorporate both Irish and Scottish folklore as his mother is Scottish and his father is Irish. After doing some research I discovered that Selkies are common to myths from both countries. I felt really drawn to the stories about selkies who could change from seal to human form by shedding their skin.
One supernatural theory is that they are reincarnations of those lost at sea or humans trapped in the form of seals. In the stories selkies are often tricked into relationships with humans when someone steals their skin and they can’t return to the sea. In the original painting the boat sails were painted with the Irish flag on one side and the Scottish flag on the other to represent the child’s parentage. The full moon illuminates the narrative and the starfish bring a touch of warmth and colour to the composition. The bubbles add movement and texture and reflect the shape of the moon.
