Out of the Woods
Our heroine Artemis, goddess of wild animals, the hunt, vegetation and childbirth wears a red cloak and stands amongst red roses, the colour of war, courage, love and passion. There is also a play on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale. Artemis has tamed the wolf who was going to eat her and escaped the woodsman who was chopping down trees. A reference to deforestation which is destroying the habitat of many wild animals causing them to become endangered. When trees are cut down their stored carbon is released into the air as carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming. The silver birch is one of the most sacred trees in Celtic Mythology, symbolising new beginnings and protection.
