Sunset Over West

I painted ‘Sunset Over West’ when I found out The West Church was being closed. Having lived in Kilbarchan for many years and attending toddlers with my kids in the old Parish Church Building next door I was sad to hear this news. Habbie Simpson, the famous piper from Kilbarchan is buried in the grounds. As with many of my paintings I try to illustrate that all of nature is bound together and intrinsically connected. Butterflies are a metaphor representing transformation and remind us that life is short. Their existence is under threat due to climate change. I wanted to capture the happiness of sunflowers. Their seeds provide food for wild birds and under-threat British bees enjoy their pollen and nectar. The darkness of the church and trees is contrasted with the bright colours of the flowers and background.
