Starry Night at Eilean Donan

Eilean Donan, a small tidal island near Dornie in the Western Highlands of Scotland, nestles at the confluence of three sea lochs: Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh. Connected to the mainland by a footbridge, it boasts an iconic castle frequently featured in photography, films, and TV. Originally built in the 13th century and associated with Clan Mackenzie and Clan MacRae, the castle fell victim to government forces during the 18th-century Jacobite rebellions. It was reconstructed in the 20th century by Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap. The island’s name, “Eilean Donan,” pays homage to Donnán of Eigg, a Celtic saint martyred in 617, who is believed to have founded a church on the island.
