Daydreams for the May Queen
As the Beltane fires roar, our souls soar for the return of Spring. The May Queen brings the renewal of growth, fertility and life. When the first shoots of Spring push through the dark earth where they have been dormant in a state of suspended animation, we feel a deep sense of hope and new beginnings. After a long hard winter, the first whisper of sun on our skin evokes strong emotions of relief and joy. We can only imagine the euphoria of our ancestors who lived in the cold darkness, enduring the wild forces of nature for many months of cruel winter. Our May Queen is poised before the Standing Stones of Callanish, an ancient monument to lunar and solar cycles, aligned with celestial events. These giant megaliths track the complex 18.6-year cycle of the moon which seems to dance along them like a great god visiting the earth. She is surrounded by her Daydream Tulips, transforming from a lemon yellow and maturing to a deep apricot, reflecting the colours of the Beltane fires. The elusive hares zigzag speedily amongst the rocks, a symbol of transformation, fertility and renewal. Deeply linked to lunar cycles and otherworldly realms, these shape-shifting familiars epitomise the return of Spring.
